Karwa Chauth 2026: Date, Pooja Muhurat and Moonrise Time

Karva Chauth ka vrat is special for married Hindu women. Married women celebrate this loving festival by fasting from sunrise until the moonrise. They keep the fast and pray for the long life, safety, and good health of their husbands.

  • Festival Date: Thursday, October 29, 2026
  • The Pooja Muhurat: Around 5:38 PM to 6:56 PM. The Pooja Muhurat varies slightly by location; check a local Panchang. Women gather together during these hours to look at the holy calendar, read stories, and pray.
  • The Moonrise Time: Around 8:00 PM to 8:15 PM in most parts of North India. You should confirm through the local city Panchang for your exact location. Women break their Karva Chauth vrat only after seeing the moon through a traditional net.

What Is Karva Chauth: Meaning & Significance

Karva Chauth vrat is a special one-day festival for married Hindu women. They dress up in beautiful traditional clothes, keep a fast for the long life of their husbands, pray together in the evening, and break their fast only after seeing the moon through a sieve.

  • Meaning of the Name: “Karwa” means an earthen clay pot used during the rituals, and “Chauth” means the fourth day. This festival falls on the fourth day after the full moon in the holy month of Kartik.
  • Bond of Love: This festival celebrates the deep love, devotion, and lifelong bond between a husband and wife. Karva Chauth vrat brings them closer and makes their bond even stronger as the husband gives his wife water and sweets to break her fast.
  • Prayers for Long Life: The main purpose of this fast is to pray for the husband’s good health and long life. Married women pray to Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, and Lord Ganesha to bless their marriage and families.
  • Community and Sisterhood: Women gather in the evening to perform rituals, sing traditional songs, and pass their prayer plates in a circle. This beautiful ritual of the festival brings them together and helps them feel like a strong community.
  • The Role of Family: Elders bless the married women with gifts, jewelry, and a special meal called Sargi. This gesture shows family support and teaches younger generations to respect and keep cultural traditions alive.

What Is Karva Chauth Ki Kahani: Story of Queen Veeravati

Women who keep fast on this festival recite or listen to the story of Queen Veeravati during the evening pooja. According to the legend, Veeravati was the only sister of seven loving brothers. She was at her parental home during her first strict fast. In the evening, she was waiting patiently for the moonrise but was also suffering from hunger and thirst.

Her loving brothers could not bear to see her suffering. So, they lit a fire behind a distant hill and placed a mirror over a pipal tree to create a fake moon reflection to trick her into breaking the fast early. Believing the fake reflection was the actual moon, Veeravati offered her prayers and broke her fast. Because she broke her fast early, terrible news arrived that her husband had suddenly died.

In some versions of Karwa Chauth Katha, Veeravati met Goddess Parvati on her way back home, and she explained that she was tricked by her brothers. Queen Veeravati then fasted with complete devotion and followed every ritual correctly. Pleased by her pure love, the Goddess blessed her and brought her husband back to life.

Other Versions of Karva Chauth Ki Kahani

While the most famous Karva Chauth Ki Kahani involves Queen Veeravati, many other legends are also associated with this festival. Two other prominent versions are the stories of Queen Draupadi and a devoted woman named Karva.

Karva Chauth Katha of Queen Draupadi

During their exile in the forests, the Pandavas faced severe hardships. During that time, Arjuna went to the Nilgiri mountains for penance. Worried for his safety, Queen Draupadi asked for Lord Krishna’s guidance. He advised her to observe the Karwa Chauth fast, just as Goddess Parvati once did, which successfully restored her husband’s power.

Karva Chauth Katha of Karva

This version of Karwa Chauth Katha is linked with a deeply devoted woman named Karva. She used to live near a river with her husband. One day, when her husband went to bathe in the river, a fierce crocodile attacked him. Then, Karva used her spiritual power to bind the monster with a cotton thread and forced the God of Death (Lord Yamraj) to save her beloved husband.

Karva Chauth Vrat Pooja Vidhi:

Karva Chauth ka Vrat and Pooja Vidhi involves a Nirjala fast by married women for the long life, good health, and well-being of their husbands.

1. Morning Rituals & Sargi

  • Wake Up Early: Women wake up before sunrise (around or before Brahma Muhurat) and take a bath. Then, they wear new clothes to start this auspicious day with positive energy.
  • Eat Sargi: They eat Sargi, a special meal prepared and sent by their mother-in-law. This includes fruits, sweets, dry fruits, and traditional sweets, along with makeup and clothes (Solah Shringar).
  • Sankalp: After eating the Sargi, they take a vow (Sankalp) to observe the strict, waterless fast for the entire day until the moon rises at night.

2. Evening Puja Preparation

  • Decorate the Puja Area: Fasting women clean their house and set up a worship space. They place a wooden stool (chowki) with a Karwa Chauth calendar of Maa Gauri, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya on a wall.
  • Puja Samagri: They prepare a decorated prayer plate containing an earthen pot filled with water or milk, a diya, vermillion, rice grains, sweets, flowers, and a moon-sighting sieve.

3. Step-by-Step Evening Puja Vidhi

  • Invoke Deities: You have to place the idols or calendar of Maa Gauri, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya. Then, light dhoop or incense sticks, and offer them roli, fresh flowers, and sweets to seek blessings from the divine family.
  • Fill the Karwa: You have to fill your traditional earthen pot (karwa) with water, cover the top lid with sugar or wheat grains, and place a coin inside.
  • Listen to the Vrat Katha: Then, you have to hold a few grains of rice in your hand while listening to the sacred Karva Chauth Katha to understand the true ritual significance.
  • Exchange or Offer Vayana: You have to offer the karwa and other offerings (vayana) to your mother-in-law or an elderly married woman in the family to receive their blessings.

4. Moon Sighting & Breaking the Fast

  • Wait for Moonrise: In the evening after moonrise, go to your terrace or find an open area to wait patiently for the beautiful moon to appear.
  • Offer Arghya to the Moon: Light a diya, look at the moon through the sieve (chalni) or a transparent cloth, and offer water (arghya) to the moon while praying for your husband’s long life.
  • Look at the Husband: Then, turn around to look directly at your husband’s face through the same sieve, seeking his blessings.
  • Break the Fast: Your husband offers you the first sip of water to break the Nirjala fast. Then, enjoy a full, delicious meal with your husband and other family members.
